Motorhome adventures in Sweden: A travel guide for the roads of the North
Love travel inspired,
I would like to tell you about my experiences and discoveries on the streets of Sweden. This country has enchanted me with its diversity and beauty and I hope my experiences will inspire you too.
Welcome to Sweden!
When you travel through this picturesque country, you will quickly notice that traffic is a little different here. The roads are surrounded by stunning scenery and the rules are clearly defined to ensure safety and order.
Beware of moose! – this is not a cliché, but a friendly warning that you should take seriously, because these majestic animals are often found near roads.
The rules of the Swedish way
First, let's look at the traffic rules and speed limits, which are essential for a safe and pleasant journey. In cities, the speed limit is usually 50 km/h, on country roads it is 70 to 80 km/h, and on main roads you can expect 90 to 100 km/h. The motorways allow a brisk journey of 110 km/h, in some places even 120 km/h. But be careful: Sweden relies on variable speeds that depend on the weather conditions, so always keep an eye out for the current signs.
Asphalted and unpaved roads
One of the things that fascinated me the most is the mix of paved and unpaved roads. While the main roads are mostly well-developed, the back roads offer a completely different adventure - they are often unpaved and take you through impressive landscapes, although you should watch out for potholes, sometimes small and sometimes large.
Alcohol and mobile phone while driving
Remember, in Sweden the blood alcohol limit is very low, only 0.2 ‰. Drinking and driving is not tolerated and is punished severely. It is also forbidden to use your cell phone while driving and you must always have your lights on, even during the day. These rules are important for your safety and that of others.
Over bridges and through forests
My journey took me over the Øresund Bridge, an impressive structure that connects Sweden and Denmark. The journey is an experience in itself and takes you straight into the heart of Sweden. And then there are the forests - endless and quiet, a place of peace and encounter with nature.
Camping culture in Sweden
There is a lot for us campers to discover in Sweden. Wild camping is often prohibited, but there are numerous campsites that will welcome you with open arms. Pay attention to the rules when parking and enjoy the freedom that this country offers.
The art of waste disposal in Sweden
As a camper, the disposal of waste, especially feces, is of great importance. Sweden not only scores with its impressive nature and endless roads, but also with an excellent infrastructure for travelers with camper vans.
During my trip through the land of moose and northern lights, I discovered that the Swedish Road Traffic Administration (Trafikverket) operates a network of waste disposal stations, which are mostly located at rest areas along the main roads. These stations are a real gift for us campers, as they offer free opportunities to dispose of rubbish and empty the toilet cassette.
However, it is important to note that grey water should not be mixed into stormwater drains in order to protect the beautiful Swedish nature.
Some petrol stations and public facilities also offer disposal options, often free of charge or for a small fee; just ask at the cash register.
To plan your route, I recommend using a map with the known waste disposal stations in Sweden. These maps are available online and show you where the nearest station for your route is.
My conclusion
Sweden is a dream destination for motorhome travelers. The rules are clear, the roads are inviting and the nature is simply overwhelming.
