Läckö Castle: A baroque jewel on Lake Vänern

We celebrated Midsummer 2024 at the Läckö estate. We enjoyed the Midsummer festival in bright sunshine and with a view of Lake Vänern. Our goal was to also visit the beautifully situated castle from the inside in the next few days.

Position

Läckö Castle is located on the island of Kållandsö in Lake Vänern, Sweden's largest lake. The picturesque location on the water gives the castle a unique atmosphere. The castle is located about 25 km north of Lidköping and 2 hours northeast of Gothenburg.

Entrance

Prices for admission and tours of the castle vary depending on the season. Adults pay between SEK 110 and SEK 150. Children and young adults under 26 years of age are admitted free. Guided tours in English are also offered at various times.

A look into 700 years of history

Läckö Castle is one of the most impressive baroque castles in Sweden. Its history stretches back to the 13th century, when it served as a fortress for bishops and kings, among others.

Over the centuries, the castle has undergone numerous changes. It only acquired its baroque appearance in the 17th century, when Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie expanded and rebuilt the castle according to the ideals of his time. Various architects, artists and artisans from all over the world contributed to the design of the castle.

Baroque halls and historic rooms

From the inner courtyard of the castle you can explore different rooms. Here you will find

including an impressive wine cellar and the treasury and armory with an impressive exhibition of historical firearms.

Over the centuries, Läckö Castle has been used for various purposes, including as a prison. The prison is a testament to the turbulent history of times gone by.

In the next room is the well, which was built in the Middle Ages to supply the castle's residents and defenders with water using the water pump. Here you get a good sense of history.

If you follow the picturesque stairs up, you can explore the Baroque halls. Here you can immerse yourself in the magnificent past and imagine how nobles and kings once stayed in these rooms. The opulent furniture, tapestries and paintings tell of a time of splendor and power. The Knights' Hall was once a meeting place for kings and nobles.

The high ceilings with their artistic stucco work give the room a truly majestic atmosphere. The walls are richly decorated with tapestries. Every floor and every room offers an impressive glimpse into the past. You literally immerse yourself in history and get a great insight into life at the castle back then.

The castle today

Läckö Castle has belonged to the Swedish state since 1914. Today the property serves as a popular exhibition, event and excursion destination.

The castle garden

The castle garden may be small, but it is lovingly maintained and impressive. In summer you will find a rich selection of flowers, herbs and vegetables here. Every year a new garden theme is presented, fascinating visitors with flowers, plants and creative designs. On the small bench you can enjoy the peace and quiet and the view of Lake Vänern surrounded by flowers.

Events at the castle

Today, the castle is a popular tourist attraction. It has a long tradition of rich exhibition activities, and over the years, large and unique exhibitions have been held in the rooms. Every summer, visitors experience new, exciting themed exhibitions. In addition to various art exhibitions, opera events are also held here, attracting additional visitors.
