Lysekil: A jewel on the west coast of Sweden

We are very happy and grateful that friends showed us Lysekil. It was love at first sight. We had never seen this type of landscape before and we were immediately enchanted.

The fresh sea air and the sound of the seagulls, the view into the distance...

Even after several visits, Lysekil has not lost its charm for us.

The ride on the car ferry alone (which is free, by the way) was impressive for us. After about 10 minutes on the car ferry (we were pretty much the only ones who got off and stood at the railing to enjoy the view) you continue driving until you reach the center of Lysekil. There are various options here for parking and exploring the city further on foot.

Quick facts about Lysekil:

Lysekil is a charming small town with less than 10,000 inhabitants, located directly on the picturesque west coast of Sweden in Bohuslän, about 100 km north of Gothenburg.

The city stretches out on the tip of a headland directly by the sea and is surrounded by archipelagos and small islands, which is what gives it its real charm.

The charming little town of Lysekil attracts visitors from all over the world with an abundance of natural beauty and fascinating attractions. In the summer months, especially when the Swedes are on holiday and the sun is shining, the number of visitors is naturally greater, but this can only be a little more difficult when looking for a parking space, otherwise the town is very spacious and you rarely feel overwhelmed by crowds.

Therefore, a visit during the week is more pleasant than on the weekends.

The expansive bays and secluded beaches offer perfect retreats for quiet hours in nature. When you look out over the sea and into the distance, you may even feel very small in this vastness.

Lysekil promenade

The idyllic promenade by the sea is particularly beautiful. The promenade runs along the coast and offers a breathtaking view of the blue sea and the surrounding archipelago. Cozy cafes and restaurants along the way invite you to relax and enjoy the maritime atmosphere. Cozy benches and loungers offer a particularly beautiful view

Nature reserve

If you want to get an even more impressive view of the archipelago and the sea, it is worth visiting and climbing the Stångehuvud Nature Reserve. Stångehuvud Nature Reserve is located a little north of the center and is a place for climbing, right on the rocks.

The circular path along the cliffs offers breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding archipelago. The salty sea air and the picturesque landscape make this walk unforgettable. The paths lead over the typical reddish granite of Bohuslän. The small white house of the former Stångehuvuds lighthouse stands on one "peak". The view from there is indescribable and a very popular photo subject. From here, when the weather is good, you can watch the sailing ships and yachts crossing the waves.

As you continue walking along the water, you can watch divers or locals fishing for small crabs right on the skerries.

Aquarium Havets Hus

One of the city's favorites is the large Havets Hus aquarium. It is particularly popular with children and is a must-see when the weather is not so great. A visit to Havets Hus marine aquarium is like diving without getting wet; Havets Hus is a saltwater aquarium that offers an insight into the region's underwater world. It is a great place for families and sea lovers, with colorful fish and shy sea creatures frolicking in the aquariums, a spectacle you shouldn't miss.

Landmark and city centre

A historic landmark, it stands proudly above the city and invites you to take a journey through time through Swedish religious architecture. The imposing Lysekil Church is a historic building and a cultural attraction.

Gamlestan, the old heart of Lysekil, whispers stories from days long gone as you stroll through the alleys, past typical Swedish

“Pippi Longstocking Houses”.

For us, Lysekil is still a pearl even after so many visits and we are happy to show this pearl to our visitors from our old homeland.

Lysekil is more than just a destination; it is an experience that welcomes you with open arms and stays in your memory.

Parking and camping

If you visit the charming coastal town of Lysekil in Sweden, you will find that there are several parking lots and campsites for visitors. Camperplace Lysekil is a perfect place for campers to park their vehicle. If you are travelling by car, you also have several options for parking, often right along the water. Most parking lots are paid and usually the EasyPark app is used for this. It is worth exploring this picturesque town and taking advantage of the various parking options to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Conclusion

Lysekil, for me a picturesque coastal town in Sweden, enchants with a fresh sea breeze, the singing of seagulls and a breathtaking view that does not lose its charm even after repeated visits. The free car ferry offers an impressive entry into the town, which has something for everyone with its beach promenade, the Stångehuvud nature reserve and the Havets Hus aquarium. Whether you stroll through the historic streets of Gamlestan or enjoy the peace and quiet of the wide bays, Lysekil remains an unforgettable experience and a pearl of the Swedish west coast.
